Popular Mechanics in May

The cover story of the May issue of Popular Mechanics is “Titanic II: Rebirth of a Legend or a Chinese Fake?" The Titanic II project would make a fitting subject for a movie. The main character is an eccentric and adventurous Australian millionaire reminiscent of Ostap Bender, and the setting — a skillfully wrought Chinese reproduction of the legendary Titanic that, at least in the current planning stage, is impossible to differentiate from the original. The Science section features an article titled “Adam, Eve and Mathematics" that looks at the meaning of “the last common ancestor of all mankind." The “Red Star Foreigners" article in the Weapons section looks at armored vehicles of World War II. In the article “Space Race 2" in the Technology section, readers discover to what lengths private companies are willing to go to bring the space industry of the New World to a whole new level. The new Experimenting section offers a workshop on making lava lamps using only sunflower oil and Alka-Seltzer.
