Popular Mechanics Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Popular Mechanics magazine celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2012. The magazine’s editorial board produced the “Heroes of Popular Mechanics” project to mark the event.

The anniversary project aims to demonstrate that Russia’s stars of science, technology and sports deserve no less honor and respect than its famous film and television celebrities. Everyone should know and recognize the country’s top athletes, scientists and scholars.

The Popular Mechanics team used the project to draw attention to Russia’s achievements in science and technology and to convey to potential readers the values that Popular Mechanics prizes most: competence, reliability, professionalism and a focus on innovations and advances developed in Russia.

Project participants include: Sergei Zalyotin, a cosmonaut with more than 83 days in orbit and 5 hours in open space; Valery Rozov, a multiple world champion in skydiving, mountain climber and base jumper; Sergei Golovanov, a leading anti-virus expert with Kaspersky Laboratories; and Natalia Molchanova, a 16-time free-diving world champion, holder of 30 world records, Ph.D. in pedagogical science and associate professor.

The anniversary issue in November will be released in collaboration with guest editors, including the “Heroes of Popular Mechanics.”

Throughout 2012, an advertising campaign dedicated to the anniversary year will run on the Discovery Channel and the heroes’ photos will be published on the pages of Men’s Health, Esquire and National Geographic magazines, in Vedomosti newspaper and other publications, and on the websites of the magazine’s business partners.
