National Geographic World Championship

The 11th National Geographic World Championship supported by the Russian Geographical Society took place in St. Petersburg from July 27 to 31. The competition brought together 18 teams from different countries: Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Taiwan, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Mongolia, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, Britain, Russia and the U.S. Representatives of Indonesia and Mongolia participated for the first time.
 
During the competition the national teams were cheered on by Consul General of the U.S. in St. Petersburg Bruce Turner, Consul General of India in St. Petersburg Vishvas Sapkal, Vice President of Google Brian McClendon, President of National Geographic John Fahey and other officials.
 
The final round took place July 31 and was hosted by Alex Trebek, the well-known actor and star of Jeopardy!, the popular American TV show. The final brought together the three best teams after previous competitions. The victory was earned by the U.S. team, second place went to the Canadians, and the students from India finished third.
