National Geographic Russia at Golden Turtle Awards

National Geographic Russia magazine is serving as the media partner to the seventh international Golden Turtle contest for wildlife photographers. The most outstanding works from the contest will be on exhibit at the Central House of Artists on Krymsky Val in Moscow from January 19 to February 17.

National Geographic Russia magazine has its own stand at the exhibit displaying photos of giant redwoods. The magazine has run stories on this amazing tree twice, in December 2009 and again in December 2012.

Giant redwood trees live for thousands of years due to their nearly total invulnerability: The powerful trees withstand even gale force winds, while their thick bark resists flames and also contains substances that protect against fungal decay and wood-eating insects. Even a lightning strike is rarely fatal. And thus, the redwoods grow skyward century after century.
