Opening of The Moscow Times Photo Exhibition

The opening ceremony of the photo exhibition “Moscow. Times. 1992 – 2012. People. Events. City Life” was held on Oct. 16 at the Multimedia Art Museum.

Guests gathered in the first floor lobby of the Multimedia Art Museum where they viewed 12 photographs from the newspaper’s 20 years of operation. Among the images, Sanoma Independent Media publishing house founder Derk Sauer stands in the Pravda print shop holding the first issue of the newspaper, first chief editor Meg Bortin looks over the final layout of the newspaper before sending it to press, the staff celebrates Maslenitsa (Shrove Tuesday) in 2005 and other great moments from the life of the publication. Derk Sauer took the stage to pay tribute to photographers Igor Tabakov and Vladimir Filonov, calling their work, “the greatest you could ever imagine.” Guests also watched a film about the launch of The Moscow Times and listened to congratulations from friends and business partners.

The main exhibition is located in Hall No. 11 on the seventh floor. Photographs by Igor Tabakov and Vladimir Filonov depicting dramatic and historical scenes from the capital are displayed alongside impressive shots of daily life in the city. It makes for an eclectic mix of tragedy and humor. Guests also perused copies of the “Moscow. Times” photo album, watched a slide show of works included in the exhibition and read through some of the most interesting articles to have appeared in The Moscow Times over the last 20 years.

The exhibition will run until Oct. 24 in the Multimedia Art Museum at 16 Ulitsa Ostozhenka.
