United Press: 'Slow Love'

The book division of Alpina Business Books/United Press has released "Slow Love: How I Lost My Job, Put on My Pajamas and Found Happiness" by Dominique Browning.

Dominique Browning worked for 13 years as editor-in-chief of one of the world’s leading interior design magazines, a publication with a monthly readership of 950,000. One Monday, she rushed to her usual morning staff meeting, but instead of discussing plans for developing the magazine, the owner informed them that House & Garden would no longer be published and that all the employees are fired. On that morning, Dominique discovered that she had no job, no lover and no reason to get up in the morning.

Returning home, she took off her boring formal suit, put on her favorite pajamas and decided never to take them off again. She kept to her promise for one year. This book is the record of that time. She devoted those months to a “slow love” of life. Through deep conviction, Dominique Browning used “slow love” and “slow food” to regain her appreciation of simple things.

Dominique learned to once again rejoice in the smell of freshly baked muffins, the beauty of wild flowers and the warmth and comfort of her own home. It was as if her life had shifted from the high speed of a freeway to the unhurried pace of a country road, and she decided to enjoy the new rhythm. In that year she learned not to rush — not only in everyday affairs, but also in relationships. In the silence of an empty house on the coast, Dominique was able to hear her own desires and learn to love herself for who she was. She discovered that her constant rushing had prevented her from being honest with herself and that “slow love” for herself and the world opened up the opportunity to be happy here and now.

Dominique Browning’s experience will help readers change the rhythm of their lives and make them safer and more productive. Together with the author, they will reflect upon what so many people try to forget as they rush here and there, and are nonetheless constantly running late.
