New Release from Alpina Business Books
The book department of Alpina Business Books/United Press has released “Beyond Business” by former British Petroleum (BP) chief John Browne. The book tells the story of the man who achieved a revolution in the oil industry.
Browne was one of those who helped make the oil companies of the world understand that competitive advantage means not only access to natural resources, but also the ability to exercise social responsibility. Browne had the opportunity to work in numerous countries, including Russia, where his company initially suffered significant losses. He also gained experience in other post-Soviet states such as Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Over the course of his long career Browne met many prominent politicians such as Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, then-President and now Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and others.
“Beyond Business” reveals the personal life of the former BP chief — from his childhood in Iran and studies in a British boarding school to his relationship with his mother and the scandal surrounding his sexual orientation. His recollections span the 1950s to the late 2000s — an entire era for oil companies in which they experienced multiple crises and came to understand that there is more to their business than just oil.
