Around the World in 90 Minutes with Popular Mechanics
Now anyone can view a NASA-sponsored live video feed from the International Space Station on the Popular Mechanics magazine website .
Cameras mounted inside the space station enable viewers to observe the crew members at work while outboard cameras reveal dazzling images of Planet Earth as seen from orbit. With the ISS making a complete revolution of Earth every 90 minutes, the resident staff enjoy alternating sunrises and sunsets every 45 minutes. As the ISS passes through its brief “nighttime” in the shadow of the Earth, the picture from the outboard cameras often goes black, but even that darkness is sometimes punctuated by glowing city lights or distant flashes of lightning. The visuals are accompanied by sounds of the ISS crew communicating with mission control.
