Popular Mechanics Presents the Human Vacuum Cleaner

The editors of Popular Mechanics magazine present a staggering and incredible project: The Human Vacuum Cleaner.

While working one day to complete an issue of the magazine, Popular Mechanics editors gazed at an ordinary fly and wondered why it is that humans don’t fly – or more accurately, why they don’t scale vertical walls. “Why couldn’t they?” the editors asked themselves. From that point on, the editorial staff began working overtime to create a unique machine for climbing any vertical surface.

After a short trial run on the walls of their office, editors decided to try out their device on something a little more serious. A few days later, Moscow industrial mountaineering champion Yevgeny Rybka used the Popular Mechanics machine made from two vacuum cleaners, a pair of specially constructed suction cups and 300 meters of electrical cord to scale the glass facade of Europe’s tallest skyscraper, the eastern Federation Tower in Moscow.

Readers will discover how the unique machine for climbing surfaces was built and learn about its various design features and the rigorous testing it underwent in the April issue of Popular Mechanics magazine. They can also see the test with their own eyes on the portal www.popmech.ru.
